I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver. ~Maya Angelou
As a mom I work hard to be a good role model for my son. I grew up with a Mom that had such a giving heart and saw her many times give when she really didn’t even have it to give (and she still does to this day).
It’s one of the things I’m most proud of about her, though. I have the utmost respect for her, and I like to think that some of her generous nature rubbed off on me. Maybe one day my son will think the same way about me as I do my mother.
Whether it’s helping fill food baskets for those less fortunate during the holidays, or stuffing Salvation Army stockings for kids that may not get anything for Christmas otherwise, or working with special needs kids to make arts and craft projects, my son realizes the importance of giving of money, time, and love.
I love when I hear about companies/businesses/brands that give back. TOMS is one of the best examples of philanthropy. TOMS exhibits goodwill towards fellow members of the human race…which is the definition of philanthropy. TOMS is a company that leads by example. I show my son on small scale the importance of giving back, TOMS shows the World the importance of giving back on a large scale.
I’m humbled by the generosity of a company that puts the needs of others before the mighty dollar.
In 2006, American traveler Blake Mycoskie befriended children in a village in Argentina and found they had no shoes to protect their feet. Wanting to help, he created TOMS, a company that would match every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes given to a child in need. One for One.®
Just like that — one man with a giving heart saw a need and did something about it. Setting an example for all companies.
TOMS gives away 3 types of shoes:
- Canvas Unisex Slip-Ons – a great all-purpose style (similar to the ones customers buy every day); kids can choose from a variety of colors
- Sports Shoes – constructed for physical activity; supplements our Giving Partners’ programs targeting childhood obesity
- Winter Boots – Fleece-lined, waterproof, adjustable fit; built to withstand cold climates.
Realizing this movement could serve other basic needs, TOMS Eyewear was launched in 2011. With every pair purchased, TOMS will help give sight to a person in need. One for One.®
We are in business to improve lives: TOMS has given over 10 million pairs of shoes to children and restored sight to over 150,000 people. Currently TOMS gives in over 60 countries worldwide – including the United States.

I have never tried on a pair of TOMS but I have heard great things about their shoes. The fact that you automatically give back with your purchase is such a sweet bonus!
I just bought a pair last month and I wouldn’t mind buying another one too. I LOVE Toms!!!
Forgot to say that I love them even more because of their giving back!
My daughter loves Toms and she buys them with the One for One program in mind. I think this will be her third year buying Toms shoes. I love the styles myself.
I got a coupon in the mail for Journey’s…will be using it to my Marisa’s TOMS…love saving money too 🙂
This is on my list of shoes to try out. They look so comfy.
What a great and inspiring post. I have to admit, I had not heard of TOMS before I read this post — will definitely have to look them up and check out their shoes. The are to be commended for their philanthropy!
Yes, Tim, they are an amazing company!
I’ve been hearing a lot about TOMS lately. Their canvas slip-ons are supposed to be crazy-comfortable.
That is wonderful that they are so philanthropic
Isn’t it, though?!
Sounds great. Thank you for sharing. Will be passing along this information!
I never knew that TOMS had such an amazing story behind the creation of their company. Good for Blake for taking action and helping so many people.
I, like some of the others, have never heard of them either. However, I did see an add for them somewhere. I think it wa son Triberr. Great to hear the story behind em!
Thanks for enlightening me about TOMS. I’ve almost bought them for my kids – now I most definitely will! I knew a little bit about the story, but now that I know this much, I am truly amazed.
I love when companies give back, and WOW do they give back! A pair for a pair? That’s amazing! It’s usually like, 10cents per purchase for other things!
Awesome company, awesome post! Just found you on sverve!
I own several pairs of TOMS. I love that they give back with each purchase.
I love TOMS and how they give back!
