Why Men Don’t Get Checkups and How Health Testing Centers Can Help

It is my experience that many men do not get annual checkups. In fact, they don’t go to the doctor at all unless they’re so sick they think they might die. Thanks to company’s like today’s sponsor, Health Testing Centers, for recognizing the need for easy and convenient health testing for men like my husband or anybody needing blood work or a health test when circumstances may not make going to a doctor convenient.

Why men don't get checkups and how Health Testing Centers make it easy and affordable

My husband is a prime example… a man who rarely goes to the doctor unless I push him. I mean really PUSH him. He is always too busy, and he rarely gets sick, so he doesn’t see a need in going to the doctor for checkups when he feels fine.

Statistically speaking, this is the norm.

According to Heart.org three of the main reasons men don’t go to the doctor are…

  • They don’t have a doctor.
  • They don’t have health insurance.
  • They don’t have the time.

Health Testing Centers is the perfect solution to all three of these reasons!

Why Men Don’t Get Checkups

Don’t Have a Doctor

You do not have to have a family doctor to use Health Testing Centers. Once you purchase your test, your request will be automatically routed to an independent third-party physician network. No additional action is required on your part. An email will also be sent to you with the requisition (physician order) information.

If you do have a family physician, you simply log in to your Health Testing Centers account and download the results, then forward them to your physician via email, fax or hard copy.  They are happy to send them to your primary medical doctor for you, you’ll just need to complete an authorization form, send it back, and then they will send your results. So no doctor visit required.

Don’t Have Insurance

Health Testing Centers accepts credit card and PayPal, so it doesn’t matter if you have insurance or not. Although we have insurance, by the time you pay co-pays and your part of the coverage for the doctor bill and any tests, it is probably cheaper to just get the tests through Health Testing Centers… plus you don’t have to actually see a doctor unless your test results warrant you should.

Don’t Have Time

You may think you don’t have the time for an annual checkup, but Health Testing Center is so easy and convenient… trust me, you have the time for this.

Why men don't get checkups and how Health Testing Centers help...

After you register an account on healthtestingcenters.com (which took all of 2 minutes) you choose the test you want, in our case, my husband chose the Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA), Free: Total Ratio, then add it to the cart.

You will then enter your information (Name, Date of Birth, phone number, email address, street address). Then you will be transferred to the payment page.

Once your order is complete, you will receive 2 emails. The first email will be the confirmation of your order and the second will be the requisition (they suggest you print the order).

They have over 3,000 labs, either LabCorp or Quest Diagnostic locations. We had both labs near us, so we chose the most convenient one for us.

You can either walk in during hours to have your blood drawn or make an appointment if you are tight on time. It just so happens that the lab we chose is just down the street from our son’s school and he got out a half a day of school on Monday, so my husband made the appointment for 11:00 am and had the bloodwork done and was back in his car at 11:05 am. Seriously, could not have been quicker or more painless.

They will notify you by email when your results are ready.  You can then sign in to your Health Testing Centers account to view and download your result reports.

Most results are available within 1-2 business days from the time that you visited the lab. But they do state that some tests can take longer. My husband got his results in two days.

PSA Free: Total Ratio

As I mentioned earlier, he got the Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA), Free: Total Ratio.

A free PSA test is often used as a follow-up test when there is a moderately elevated total PSA (typically between 4.0 and 10.0 ng/mL). The free: total ratio can provide additional information to help understand the likelihood of prostate cancer in this group of men.

My husband did have a PSA test with an elevated number, so the Free: Total Ratio alleviated our worries since the number was much lower for the Free: Total Ratio PSA. Typically, an annual checkup consists of a PSA test for a man in his forties and fifties, so a Free: Total Ratio was going a step further than the basic PSA test.

This is another excellent reason to use Health Testing Centers — as a second opinion.

The whole process from start to finish was easy, fast, and affordable. My husband definitely said it was much easier than going for checkups.

health testing centers the perfect solution to medical checkups that men dread...

More importantly, he received excellent service and confidential results, and I feel good knowing that my husband had a PSA test. Now I can quit “pushing” him about it for at least another year.

Health Testing Centers is not only great for men who don’t want to go to the doctor for regular checkups but for women, as well, as long as you’re 18 and older.

Here are just a few of the tests they offer:

  • Expanded Wellness Package – This package measures 14 metabolic markers (including blood sugar, calcium, electrolytes, liver enzymes, and waste products filtered by the kidneys), as well evaluating red and white blood cells and a urine sample.
  • Celiac Disease Antibody Profile – This test detects antibodies that the body makes when it cannot adequately process gluten, a primary component of wheat, barley, rye, and certain other grains. This test includes tissue transglutaminase antibodies (TTG), a commonly used test for celiac screening, as well as deaminated gliadin peptide (DGP) antibodies. A high antibody level suggests a high likelihood of celiac disease.
  • Cancer Antigen (CA) 125 – CA 125 is a protein produced by the fallopian tubes and the lining of the abdominal cavity. CA 125 is generally found in greater concentration in tumor cells than in other cells of the body. Consequently, CA 125 is used as a tumor marker, an indicator of cancer, especially for ovarian cancer.
  • Vitamin D, 25 Hydroxy – This test measures the amount of vitamin D in the body. Vitamin D helps regulate calcium and phosphorus.

They have a myriad of tests to choose from. Be sure to check them out to see the complete list of tests they offer.

I’m planning on doing the since it’s so cost-effective and I can’t seem to get my ob/gyn to do one. Hopefully, the results will be good, and I’ll have peace of mind, and if not, I’ll have the results for my doctor, and we can take the next steps.

Ladies, if your significant other is like the majority of men and don’t go for annual checkups, give them the gift of Health Testing Centers…

  1. You forgot to add that they are stubborn as donkeys and just a muley when it comes to their health. At least that’s how it is with my husband. LOL

You’re so right, Stacie. I know my husband is so stubborn regarding his health. 🙂

  2. This sounds like such a great service. I like that it is reasonably quick.

  3. GREAT reasons– another one would be because they think they can cure it on their own (aka scared to go the Doctor). I will have to share these ideas w/ a few male friends I know who need this, thanks!

  4. As a man, I can’t really argue with this one. 🙂 I do have a primary doctor and insurance! It’s the time that kills me honestly. Even just making the phone call to set up an annual physical is painful for me. So my wife’s solution is she calls and makes an appointment for me. I’m happy with that and so is she. Thanks for the tips about these Health Testing Centers. I’ll have to look into them.

I’ve made appointments for my husband, too, Andrew. My husband really did love the convenience of Health Testing Centers and I did fill it out, and made the online appointment for the PSA test for him. 🙂 All he had to do was drive there (which was exactly one mile from our son’s school) and was literally in and out in 5 minutes. He had no complaints.
