Low self-esteem can hinder you, hold you back from being the best you, you can be. It doesn’t matter how old you are, it’s important to have a positive self-esteem. We teach the importance of self-confidence in our children, but those lessons sometimes get forgotten when we become adults.
As an adult, there’s so much we have to deal with and encounter every day, that it can be hard to keep ourselves feeling positive. How we view ourselves and our abilities can be influenced by the people and world around us.

If you have to spend a good amount of time in a place that’s filled with negativity or stress, your self-esteem is going to suffer. This could be the living situation you’re in or even work. Having to go into the office each day and dreading going, for whatever reason, will tear you down. It may be hard to leave your job and find a new one, but it may be what’s best for your own mental health and improving your low self-esteem.
Negative and draining people
Have you ever been friends with someone who was a ‘Negative Nancy’? Everything they talked about would be how terrible something or someone was. Nothing was ever good. These types of people affect you! This isn’t to say you shouldn’t listen to your friends who are having a bad time, but there’s a difference between being supportive and just being there to have the positivity drained out of you. Before you know it, you’ll find more negative attributes to your own mindset.
This includes negative and draining people as well, but what if they’re a spouse or a loved one? It’s hard to just distance yourself from them, but sometimes, that’s what’s best. Being in a toxic relationship will leave you second guessing yourself, make you feel less than what you really are, and overall, it doesn’t build you up or support you in any way.
Don’t let yourself be anyone’s punching bag – verbally, mentally, or physically. Distance yourself from relationships like this for the sake of your health.
Procrastination – Doing things last minute – Not wanting to ‘adult’
We’ve all been there, there’s something we really don’t want to do but we know we have to do it. So we keep putting it off and putting it off and telling ourselves we’ll get to it, but never actually do get to it until the very last moment. Procrastination only adds stress to the situation.
When I was younger, I never procrastinated. Ever. Yet, as I’ve gotten older, I seem to have become a bit of a procrastinator. It can be a personality trait, I think, and not mean a thing, however, wanting to put off the things you need to do and fulfill your adult duties could be a sign of depression, especially if it is negatively impacting your life, which definitely takes a toll on one’s self-esteem.
Find a system that works for you… helping you manage your time between the things that have to get done and what you want to do. When you complete the things on your ‘have to’ list, you’ll feel better about yourself and you won’t feel guilty about taking time to do whatever you want.
If you’re feeling as though your self-esteem is suffering, take a look at the things going on in your life. This is your life and you should be enjoying it and feeling good about yourself. Don’t let your self-esteem and well being suffer because of the people and environment around you.
