We lost a very funny actress today. Estelle Getty best known for her role as Sophia, on “Golden Girls”, which ran from 1985 to 1992 ” featuring four female retirees sharing a house in Miami, grew out of NBC programming chief Brandon Tartikoff’s belief that television was ignoring its older viewers.
The show was an instant hit and people of all ages tuned in. I was only in my late teens and early twenties when Golden Girls was on, but I remember watching it often ( and laughing often ). Especially at Getty’s character, Sophia. She had a deadpan humor laced with an edge of sarcasm.
