We all come in different shapes and sizes, so it goes to reason that our shapewear will come in different shapes and sizes, too. Every woman’s body is beautiful, however, most of us still see imperfections when we look into the mirror, no matter our size.
When I was younger I was very skinny and I hated my body. I had no shape, a very boyish figure. Fast forward many years later, I gained a lot of weight and hated my body because I am thick around the middle (more lower stomach) – an “apple” figure. I’ve been losing weight recently, though, and getting more of an hourglass figure.
Even though I’m liking my body more now, knowing my figure shape is important in determining the type of shapewear I need to help my body look its best in my clothes.
This is the reason I love shapewear… it can help to smooth out little (and not so little) imperfections. Give us a more smoother look and help to accentuate our curves.

I think I’m an inverted pear when I’m at my normal, healthy body weight. I’m a slightly puffier version of that when I’m not.
I had no idea shape affected what you wear underneath! I figured it was stretchy anyway. I guess I’m somewhere between an apple and rectangle.
I always figured it would stretch to whatever shape too. Who knew there was a science to it?
Inverted triangle I am. This post is the most informative about body shapes I’ve ever read. Thanks.
Great post, very informative! Thanks for sharing.
You know, I’ve been doing it wrong! I didn’t know I could use a slip or high waist, I thought only people with problem mid sections needed that. This is really good to know!
Wow, thanks for this. I never really understood that I needed a specific kind of shapewear for my body type. Now I see what it means. Also, I think my body has changed its shape over time LOL.
While I e worked hard after both babies the skin just isn’t the same unfortunately. I’d love to find a good shape wear that will hold in my love handles at times!
This is awesome. I never know what to buy to make me look my best.
I really like waist cinchers, but other than that, I haven’t really found any other type of shapewear that works for me. Maybe I need to give Spanx a try someday.
I seriously need to look into some shape wear but it is so hard to tell what your own shape is.
That’s such a great guide. I think I’m a pear, but it’s nice to have a guide to use to figure it out.
Still loving this post, great tips!
Interesting. Never thought of my body shape when researching shapewear… I was always trying the sausage casing method and trying to get it all squeezed in there! I think I am somewhere between a pear and an apple.
This is one of those things I should have realized, but didn’t. It makes total sense that different shapes would need different shapewear, but I never considered what would be best for me.
I keep telling people, it’s so important to know your bodyshape and dressed based on that. Great tips!
I miss the figure I had when I was younger, of course I hated it then. I guess shape wear isn’t one size fits all.
This is a great reminder that our body type changes, I know mine has.
I’m going to copy this down for the next time I go shopping for shape wear. Comparing the different body shapes (of which I didn’t know what kind of shape wear I should be buying for mine)…the whole thing makes sense to buy something that is more personal to ones body figure and not just “something to flatten ‘that’ part” LOL.
