Angel Biscuits a Light and Fluffy Biscuit

I made these Angel biscuits (and I do use the term biscuits loosely because they aren’t as dense and ‘crumbly’ as the typical southern-style biscuit) during the holidays (before starting my Keto diet) but just now getting the opportunity to share them with you.

What are Angel Biscuits

Angel biscuits are yeast-raised biscuits or quick-rise yeast biscuits because it uses a “cold rise” method. This means that the biscuits are placed in a cold oven. Do not preheat the oven. The angel biscuits will finish rising as the oven heats up. As soon as the oven reaches 400 degrees, set a timer for 10 minutes and allow the biscuits to bake until just golden brown.

I like to add butter and honey to my Angel Biscuits.

I love these quick-rise biscuits so much, and just because I’m doing a lazy Keto diet doesn’t mean I won’t ever make these again, because I most definitely will. But I’ll probably only make them a couple times a year.

These made-from-scratch angel biscuits are great for breakfast, of course, like with this Sausage and Potato Hash, but they’re great with any meal, actually.

If you’re not doing a special diet and love light and fluffy biscuits, you’ll want to give these Angel Biscuits a try.

Angel Biscuits Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 package (1/4 ounce) instant yeast
  • 1/3 cup warm water, heated to about 110 degrees
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup butter softened
  • ½ cup milk

Directions

  1. In a small bowl, stir together the yeast, warm water, and honey and set aside for about 5-10 minutes until the mixture is foamy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Next, cut in the butter with a fork or pastry cutter until the butter is completely combined.
  4. Add the milk and yeast mixture to the dry ingredients next.
  5. Mix until combined, then turn out onto a floured surface and knead for 30-60 seconds until smooth (the dough will still be a bit sticky).
  6. Pat the dough out into a 6×6 inch square and cut into 9 square biscuits with a sharp knife.
  7. Place the biscuits onto a greased cookie sheet and cover them with a clean kitchen towel. Set aside in a warm place for 30 minutes to begin rising.
  8. Remove the kitchen towel and place the sheet of biscuits in a cold oven. Set the oven to 400 degrees. When the oven temperature reaches 400 degrees, bake the biscuits for 10 minutes until lightly golden brown.
  9. Serve the biscuits warm with butter, jam, and/or honey.

Servings: 9

Prep time: 40 minutes

Baking time: approximately 15 minutes.

Remember to watch closely because as soon as your oven reaches 400 degrees, you will want to set a 10-minute timer.

Angel biscuits are great with butter and honey on them.

Light and Fluffy Angel Biscuits

This biscuit recipe is adapted from an old church cookbook. The original recipe did not call for any rise time outside of the oven, and I found just 30 minutes before going into the oven does produce the best results.

You won’t want to eat biscuits any other way after you’ve tried these!

I hope you enjoy these angel biscuits as much as we do. But if biscuits aren’t your thing, you might want to try my Strawberry Banana Muffins. or this delicious flourless chocolate cake made in the instant pot.
