My husband and I were talking about a short getaway, and couldn’t decide on the perfect destination. We now have a 15-year-old son, so vacations aren’t as easy to plan. Things that worked in the past just don’t cut it when you have a teenager.

I need something that will suit everyone, and that is hard to find without a huge expense and a lot of hassle. Fortunately, we live near the Great Smoky Mountains, Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, and Gatlinburg, so getaways are convenient.

With so much to do in the area, it’s not always easy deciding what to do, though.

When I heard that Wilderness at the Smokies was celebrating 10 family-fabulous years, we knew that’s where we had to go for our short family vacation.

Celebrating 10 Family Fun Years

Wilderness at the Smokies was established in 2008. I remember driving by the construction when they were building it on our way to Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, and how excited we were to see what Wilderness at the Smokies was going to look like. We knew it was going to be amazing, but until you see it with your own eyes, you really can’t fathom how huge it is.

We would point out to our son (who was four-years-old in 2008) the huge slides and water fun as we would go by, and I always made plans to check it out. It grew even more tempting because it just kept getting bigger. They literally add new features every year, and we agreed that we needed to visit.

But one thing led to another, and now I am officially kicking myself for not already experiencing the fun that Wilderness at the Smokies has to offer.

Our son has had the pleasure of visiting Wilderness at the Smokies with friends, but this will be our first time as a family.

Activites for Every Age

Between its indoor and outdoor waterparks, Wilderness at the Smokies has something for everyone. I know my son and husband will love the water features.

There are three water parks to choose from…

  • Salamander Springs
  • Wild Waterdome
  • Lake Wilderness

I, myself, am looking forward to the more… tamer water features; because that’s just the way I roll.

After we’ve had enough of Tennessee’s largest waterpark resort, if that’s even possible with my son, we’ll check out the Family Entertainment Center at Adventure Forest.

Of course, we’ll have to eat, and they have multiple food & beverage venues, restaurants, and snack shops to keep us fed and happy. I think my husband will especially love that aspect of the Wilderness at the Smokies, he’s a real connoisseur of anything edible. Or so I like to say, much to his chagrin.

Convenience

The thing that makes Wilderness of the Smokies so convenient is that itis a vacation destination all to itself. They have a wide range of accommodations to fit any size party, from single rooms to multi-room suites that sleep up to 16.

Family fun

There is no need to go anywhere else once you check in at Wilderness at the Smokies. But if for some reason you find the need to do some exploring, you will love the location.

If you’re a Dolly Parton fan, her hometown is only 4 miles away in Sevierville. Pigeon Forge and Dollywood are a short drive (10 miles), and Gatlinburg, with the fantastic Ripley’s Aquarium, is only 15 miles away.

Of course, you may decide to check out that national park in their backyard, too.

The Great Smoky Mountain National park is only 18 miles from the Wilderness at the Smokies, which makes it easy to visit on your trip. I plan on taking one day of our trip to hike in the morning and spend the rest of the day playing in the water.
