Next week I will have been blogging for eleven years. Over the past eleven years so much has changed. Mostly for the better. One thing that is hugely popular right now is video.
And it isn’t going anywhere.
In fact, video is large, in charge, and is not going anywhere. It will continue to be king. When I started my YouTube channel I mainly did it to just have another way of promoting my blog. See, I’m camera-shy.
I so want to vlog, but I just keep holding myself back. I know if I want to keep up with the trends and keep my brand at the forefront, I really need to start vlogging.
So I’ve been doing a lot of research and talking to some blogging and vlogging friends for encouragement. I have done several videos, so at least I’m not starting from scratch, but my husband has always done my editing for me. I want to learn how to do video production myself. Of course, if you need a video on a big scale or commercial spots, you can hire video production out.
I’d like to share some tips I’ve learned with you if you want to do your own videoing and editing…
Video Production Tips for Vloggers
Script
If you’re just starting out or don’t feel comfortable in front of the camera, like me, you might find it easier if you have a script. Or at least, jot down notes, highlighting your key points.
It’s so easy to forget the things you want to say once the camera starts recording, so if you have a script you’ll be sure to include everything you want to say. Plus, you’ll feel more comfortable when the camera starts rolling, too.
Lighting
Lighting is key. It can make a huge difference in the look of your video. You don’t necessarily have to spend a lot of money to get good lighting, either. I use the Neewer Light Ring and it’s changed the look of my videos and puts me in the right… light.
Video Equipment
When it comes to video equipment nowadays, you really do not have to have a hugely expensive setup. In fact, I only use my iPhone. Many people do all their videos using their smartphones, too. The smartphone has amazing video and photography technology.
Just grab your phone and a tripod and you’re set.
Set & Props
When it comes to sets, it’s much easier nowadays to set up a high-quality set. You can buy backdrops at reasonable prices or just find a quiet room or space in your home and use it as your set. If you plan on doing a video series, just keep your background the same so your videos look cohesive.
Editing
Editing videos are easier now more than ever with so many editing tools and apps. If you have a Mac, iMovie comes with the Mac so you don’t need to buy editing software and iMovie does a perfectly fine job. You can also download numerous editing apps on your iPhone or smartphone.
If you have trouble editing, there are many how-to tutorials to be found on YouTube to walk you through video editing.
I think the key here is to have fun. Producing videos shouldn’t be stressful, but if it’s something you’re not comfortable doing, leave it up to professional videographers.
