As much as I blab about on page SEO and off page SEO Google and Bing have increasingly given weight to links shared socially. Did you know that if you get your blog or website shared by someone authoritative on Twitter that your site will get a boost in Google and Bing? Also that the more times your site or website is retweeted on Twitter by Twitter users that are well thought of the higher your site will go.
Facebook is trickier to measure as Google and Bing can’t really say whether a Facebook user is influential unless the Facebook user also has a respectable Twitter authority score. Bing will look at a Facebook share and see if the same person with Twitter influence has shared it on Twitter. If they have then the Facebook share will boost someone’s results in the Search engine rankings.
How do you get people to link to your site?
Asking for Facebook shares and Twitter retweets will likely get you frowns and ignores in the social media world. To get your link shared or retweeted you are going to need to have great content first and foremost. Create content that gets a buzz and those shares will come in. Write on a popular topic with a new slant, create an infographic, or do a hilarious vlog.
Secondly if you want your content shared on fb or retweeted on Twitter it is very important that you are sharing and retweeting others content. You know the golden rule. Make sure that you are commenting or at least reading on what others are creating. Being an active participant who shares in social media will win you a lot of friends. Some are going to want to share your content because they like it and others because you have helped them.
As you can see social shares can become a new way (and more fun way) of getting links to your site. The key is to create content that people want to talk about and get out there and participate in social media as much as possible. If you are new to social media don’t be scared. People in social media are very social, kind, and funny. They are some of the smartest, wittiest, friendliest people around. Everyone who tweets on Twitter and shares on Facebook remember when they were brand new and didn’t have a clue as to what they were doing.
If Twitter is intimidating to you here is my personal story I’d like to share. My twitter account now has 25 thousand tweets. The first three months on Twitter I did not even realize that people were mentioning me. I finally figured out that people were answering my tweets and I came to love twitter. It was pretty embarrassing to admit to those people who had been tweeting with me that I didn’t know how to respond to them. I’m so glad I did though!
