Must See Horror Movies for the Big Screen

If you know me or have frequented this blog much, you know that I love horror movies. One of the reasons October is my favorite month is because of all the great thrillers and horror movies that are at the movies or on TV. As I was thinking about my favorite horror movies I realized that they all need to be seen on the big screen.

Thanks to today’s sponsors, Best Buy and Epson America, for making that possible for horror movie lovers like me.

Horror movies are my favorite genre of movies. As far back as I can remember, I’ve always loved the excitement of being afraid, the adrenaline (I’m not an adrenaline junkie, though). Here are my picks for the best horror movies to watch on the big screen

Must-See Horror Movies

The Exorcist

The Exorcist is based loosely on real-life events (another reason it was so terrifying, I think) of the demon-possession of young Regan (played by Linda Blair) and boasted as one of the most profitable horror movies ever made.

I didn’t see “The Exorcist” when it first came out at the movies in 1973 because I was too young. No way my mom would have let me gone to see it. But I remember hearing stories of people fainting, getting sick, and having to just leave the theater out of fear. The Exorcist has to be at the top of any horror movie buff’s big-screen list.

The Descent

The Descent is about a young woman, Sarah, who experienced severe emotional trauma a year before, is joined by several friends for a girls weekend to go on a cave exploring adventure in North Carolina.

This film is probably one of the scariest movies I’ve personally ever watched because for a lot of the movie it deals with things that really could happen, and without giving anything away, if you’re claustrophobic (like me), this movie will be INTENSE. All the more reason it should be seen on the big screen.

The Shining

The Shining starring Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance was based on the book by the same name by Stephen King. Jack takes on a job as the winter caretaker of the Overlook Hotel, a very isolated hotel in Colorado, in hopes to cure his writer’s block, with just his wife, Wendy, and son, Danny (who has psychic premonitions, btw).

Since my first ever Stephen King book was The Shining, it holds a special place in my horror movie heart. With the grand Overlook Hotel and the horror within its walls, it definitely is a big-screen must-see.

Halloween

The movie Halloween tells the tale of how young 6-year old Michael Myers had killed his 17-year old sister, and was locked away for 15 years. But on October 30, 1978, now 21, he escapes and returns back to his hometown to wreak terror, mayhem, and vengeance on the town and his now 15-year-old sister.

Well, you cannot go through October without watching Halloween, it has become a Halloween classic. Plus it stars Jamie Lee Curtis. The big-screen experience is needed to bring the neighborhood and Michael Myers to life.

The Others

The Others is more of a psychological thriller – another favorite genre of mine. It tells the story of Grace, a devoutly religious mother of Anne and Nicolas, who move to the English coast during World War II. She is awaiting news of her missing husband while protecting her kids from a rare photosensitivity disease that causes the sun to harm them.

I really can’t say too much about this movie because it really is best if you go into not knowing anything more than I mentioned above. The English mansion for the setting of the movie alone deserves to be seen on the big screen.

The Evil Dead

Ash, his girlfriend, and three of his pals hike to a cabin in the woods for a getaway… sounds harmless, right? They find an old book, the Necronomicon, whose text reawakens the dead when it’s read aloud. Directed by Sam Raimi, this low-budget film has become a cult classic.

Evil Dead II

The Evil Dead II is a remake of The Evil Dead directed by Sam Raimi and starring Bruce Campbell as Ash (he has his own TV series, Ash v Evil). Ash is still battling demons in a cabin in the woods but with a bigger budget this time. First off, Evil Dead II (like the original) in and of itself is not a good movie. It’s so campy. However, it’s this campiness that has made it a Halloween and/or horror film must-see.

It’s part comedy, part horror and it needs to be seen in all its gore glory on the big screen. It’s a great big-screen experience.

Honorable mention: If you watch The Evil Dead 1 and 2, I recommend watching the 3rd movie, Army of Darkness, which takes place immediately following Evil Dead 2, and may just be my favorite of the three movies. But you have to watch movies one and two first.
