B is for Beauty and for Biotin

Is it possible that a simple B vitamin, one of the most natural substances in the world, could actually work wonders for the health and strength of your hair, nails, and even your skin? If that B vitamin is Biotin then the answer is a resounding yes!

What is Biotin?

Biotin is a water-soluble B vitamin that is found naturally both in our bodies and in nature. It has other names – vitamin H or Vitamin B7 are also commonly used.

It’s found naturally in a lot of the foods we eat, so an actual biotin deficiency is a rarity these days (unless you have a very, very poor diet) but if you choose to take a biotin supplement as well – you can find one in most good health stores.

But tweak your daily diet a little to include a few more biotin-rich foods – then both the health and beauty benefits you can reap might surprise you!

Biotin and Your Hair

Biotin plays a vital part in the natural hair growth process and a biotin deficiency is, researchers believe, a fairly significant factor in excessive hair loss in some people.

In numerous studies, it has been found that increasing biotin intake has helped stop hair loss and encouraged new hair growth that is faster and new hair that is stronger and less prone to breakage.

Biotin can also help you retain more of your hair’s own natural pigment, which means you can keep those pesky gray hairs at bay for a little longer without having to resort to the hair dye bottle every few weeks!

Want one more example of just how great biotin can be for your hair? If you suffer from an itchy scalp or dandruff it can help relieve those annoying and unattractive conditions as well!

Biotin for Nails

Long, strong nails that don’t break or chip, that is what most women long for. Biotin can help you achieve that goal without having to resort to spending a fortune at  a nail salon to get false talons to cover up your own weak, brittle nails (by the way, false nails damage natural nails even further so that may only make matters worse anyway.)

Biotin strengthens your nails naturally, from the cuticle on up and you can often begin seeing the difference in just a few weeks after starting a biotin supplement!

Biotin for Skin

Perhaps the biggest benefit of biotin for skin is that it helps reduce the severity of acne and other skin blemishes and it can also be a powerful weapon against more serious skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.

Where Can I Get More Biotin?

If you want to add more biotin into your daily diet then all of the following foods have plenty of biotin in them naturally:

  • Tomatoes
  • Carrots
  • Chicken
  • Swiss Chard
  • Romaine lettuce
  • Cucumber
  • Cauliflower
  • Cabbage

In addition to upping the amount of these biotin-rich foods, you consume adding a Biotin supplement can be a good idea too.

Make sure you follow the suggested dosing directions carefully though. The US RDA for biotin is 300 mg – the size of most supplement capsules – but many experts say that if you really want to reap all the beauty benefits biotin has to offer then up to 1000mg per day is fine for most people.
