American Idol Top 7 Best to Worst

Tonight the Season 8 American Idol contestants went to the movies with songs from the cinema guided by Quentin Tarantino.  Quentin is a big music lover with music playing a big part in his movies, as well as a big American Idol lover (was a guest judge in season 3).  But so help me, Tarantino got on my nerves trying to direct them.  I mean, I love music and sing in the car and shower all the time… this doesn’t mean I should give others instruction/direction on how to sing.

Now that I got that off my chest… here are my favorites from best to worst:

  • Kris Allen – sang Falling Slowly from the movie Once.  He sang with raw emotion that moved me.  I was truly impressed and will say for me – dare I say it… better than Adam.  Randy and Kara had absolute different opinions as to his performance.  I totally agreed with Kara.  It was a beautiful performance.  I think something is wrong with Randy’s hearing. 🙂
  • Adam Lambert – sang Born To Be Wild from the movie Easy Rider.  Talking about putting on a show.  WOW!  I couldn’t take my eyes off my TV screen.  Simons says you need to learn how to express yourself more being sarcastic, of course.  Simon didn’t like it as much as last week.  I just love Adam more and more each week.

I do think Kris and Adam tied.  From the songs they sung it’s like comparing apples to oranges – their performances couldn’t have been more different.  I loved the tenderness of Kris’ performance just a tad bit more.

  • Anoop Desai – sang Everything I Do I Do For You by Bryan Adams from the movie Robin Hood Prince of Thieves.  I think Anoop did a beautiful job… he is a good ballet singer.  I liked him very much.  Randy really liked him and played off his name, ‘Anoop Dog’.  Kara thought it was one of his best.
  • Allison IrahetaI Don’t Want To Miss A Thing by Aerosmith from Armageddon.  It wasn’t one of her best performances in my opinion but it was a good solid performance.  She is "authentic" says Paula.  "Hot and spicy like bar-b-que sauce"  is what Simon says, Paula was trying to say.  He also says that she is the only hope for the females.  It really is a tough song to sing especially for a girl, much less a 16 yr. old girl.
  • Danny Gokey – sang Endless Love Lionel Ritchie from the movie by the same name, Endless Love.  I loved this song and in the 80s, one of my favorite singers was Lionel Ritchie.  So I just wasn’t so impressed with Danny’s performance.  I don’t think he started off very well… he did end the song on a good note, though.  I just don’t think it was one of his best performances.  Paula agreed that the key should not have been lowered but by the middle or end it was better.  Simon – "brilliant singer… traditional song", but Danny didn’t make it his own and he (Simon) was slightly bored.  But he could tell it was a personal song for him and gave him his props.
  • Lil Round – sang The Rose by Bette Midler from the movie by the same name, The Rose.  Paula never really critiqued her singing… Simon said "too soft" and "too middle of the road" for her.  You are not the artist we meant seven or eight weeks ago.  In her defense Lil said "I put an R&B feel to it".  I really like Lil, but just feel like she isn’t connecting to the right songs for her.
  • Matt Girauld – sang Bryan Adams If You Ever Really Loved A Woman from Don Juan DeMarco.  He started off nice but didn’t end so well.  Randy and Kara both weren’t as crazy about him.  They say he took a rock song and tried to make it more R&B and he just didn’t pull it off.

I think Lil and Matt tied for last place for me last night.  And not sure which one will go home, but I feel confident it will be one of the two.

If you missed last night’s episode or just want to watch it again… you can catch the full episode here, as well as download the songs they sang through iTunes.

All in all I think they all did quite well.  I think the bottom two are very clear cut… tune in tonight for the result show to see if I am right (or wrong); and watch  guests – Miley Cyrus and Jennifer Hudson (American Idol alumni) perform.
