Bea Arthur most notably famous for her role as Dorothy Zbornak in The Golden Girls died Saturday, April 25, 2009 in Los Angeles, a family spokesman said. Arthur was 86, spokesman, Dan Watt, told The New York Times. He said she had cancer.
I always admired Bea Arthur. She was such a strong woman… and her role as Maude Findlay in Maude in the 70s paved the way for many topics that had been taboo to be discussed on TV, like abortion and women’s rights.
Her role as Dorothy on The Golden Girls will be what she will be most remembered for though. There was something about The Golden Girls that people of all ages loved. Even though the show was about four retired senior citizens – it was so much fun to watch that even a younger demographic enjoyed it. It was smart, sassy and just hilarious. Estelle Getty who died last year played Arthur’s mother on the show, as well as Rue McClanahan and the incomparable Betty White.
Bea Arthur will be greatly missed. But I’m sure she is in heaven putting everyone in their place. Rest in peace Ms. Arthur.
