In my experience, children have mixed feelings about starting the school year after the summer. Some children find school and their classmates so stimulating that they’re bored after a long summer and can’t wait to get started this fall. Others approach August or September with a sense of impending doom. It really all depends on your individual children, but whatever their attitude is about school, you can certainly pep them up to get the school year started right. Here are a few idea for getting your kids excited for going back to school:

1. Throw a back-to-school themed party for your children and their classmates.

Every year, my children and I plan a little party two or three weekends before the school year starts. I ask my kids to invite their best friends, but also friends that they may not have spent much time with during the summer. It’s a great way for your kids to reconnect with their classmates, relax before it’s time to hit the books again, and just have some fun. It’s great fun for the kids themselves to be in charge of party-planning like decorating, cooking and baking food together, and designing their own invitations. Invite parents, too, so that you can commiserate with each other about the school year.

2. Read an exciting book together so that they can get back into the groove of classwork with a good attitude.

While some schools do have required summer reading, I find that my children don’t always enjoy the books assigned to them since they don’t have much choice in the matter. A few weeks before the school year starts, my children and I head off to the book store, and we all find a book that’s both challenging and something they’ll enjoy. This pre-school year reading session gets them revved up and ready to start classes again.

3. Do some spring cleaning and smart back-to-school shopping.

I know what you’re thinking. Back-to-school shopping sounds like a nightmare. And most of the time, it is. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Before embarking on any back-to-school shopping trip, be sure to do some spring cleaning. Together with your children, go through their clothes and school supplies, figuring out what can be reused. If clothes are too small or too big, collect them and take them to a local Salvation Army or similar charitable organization. Many school supplies can be easily recycled for use again this year. Then, before hitting the stores, make a reasonable list and stick to it. If done this way, back-to-school shopping can actually be fun!

There’s no getting around the fact that sometimes, going back to school in the fall can be stressful. But by taking steps to excite and organize your kids, you’ll save both you and your kids a lot of unnecessary hassle. Good luck!
