What Can Your DNA Tell You?

One of my favorite subjects in high school was Biology. I especially loved when we studied genetics. I’ve always been fascinated by what makes us look and act like we do. I know I got my eye color from my father and my stubborness from my Mom.

I have traits that I’m not sure what side of my family tree they came from though… I’m sure they are a combination of several different people in my family’s lineage to give me my own uniqueness.

Our DNA is important. And now with at home DNA testing, it has become more popular and easy for anyone to obtain.

How Does It Work?

Companies send a test kit to your home, and you return the kit with a sample of your DNA, and the results are then delivered back to you.

Why Do You Need To Know Your DNA?

DNA testing is used for primarily two purposes — Paternity and genetic predisposition to a certain condition. The latter is the one that I would be interested in, like am I predisposed to getting breast cancer?

At home DNA test kits are always confidential, too.

  1. Who knew you could see and tell so much!! I learned something new for sure!

  2. I can see this coming in really handy for people that were adopted and don’t have knowledge of their biological history.

  3. Great inforgraphic. DNA is similar to your finger prints and it can be used for identifying purposes.

  4. They can tell everything from you dna!! Cool idea!

  5. I’d love to have something like this done so that I could see what I might be at risk for.

  6. Someone told me people do not need to find their bio parents to see if there are any diseases in their history anymore because of this…a cheek swab often tells you everything you need to know, whether or not you know what your family history has…isn’t that incredible?

    1. This is good. I remember when a friend of mine had to hunt down his bio mom due to medical issues. I think the fact that she had given him up because he was the result of an affair & the husband would only take her back without him… and that she didn’t want to meet him or introduce him to his siblings, probably hurt him more far more than knowing he was adopted.

  7. I love this and I so remember DNA studies from school regarding the X and Y chromosomes.

  8. I would love to see if I had the genetic mutation associated with breast cancer.

  9. I was never interested in science during my school days, but can not get enough now. I absolutely love it! DNA is such a fascinating area of study.
