I think just about everyone has been affected one way or another by diabetes. Either you know someone who is a diabetic, or you, yourself, are a diabetic.

My maternal grandmother was a diabetic and died from complications from her diabetes. She went into a diabetic coma and never came out of it.

One of my maternal aunts lost her foot to diabetes and later died from complications from diabetes.

One of my uncles is a diabetic. Thankfully he takes better care of himself. And my mother-in-law is a diabetic. She too, takes care of herself since finding out she was a diabetic.

I’m familiar with diabetes. I’ve seen what it can do to a person. I’m also very aware that through heredity, I (and my husband and son) could develop diabetes. So this keeps me diligent in living a healthy lifestyle. I try to eat a healthy well-balanced diet and exercise on a regular basis (okay, working on that one). Exercise is so important though… my step-dad (yes he’s a diabetic, too) was able to stop taking medication for his diabetes by regularly exercising.

Another thing I do is keep the sugary treats down to a bare minimum in my home. It’s not easy with a child, because he loves chocolate chip cookies. He is starting to understand why I don’t want him to eat too much sugar, though. In fact, the two “treats” I do have on hand a lot is angel food cake (I use just the angel food cake mix with a can of crushed pineapples) and Werther’s Sugar Free Candy.

Sugar in and of itself doesn’t cause diabetes. But I truly believe sugar is one of the worst things we can eat too much of… moderation is the key.

Some of the best packaging… Ever!

I can’t keep my hand out of the candy jar

I recently received a package (and what an awesome package it was) of Werther’s Sugar Free Candies. I love these delicious sugar-free hard candies!

Werther’s Sugar Free Candy comes in four delicious flavors:

  • Classic Caramel
  • Caramel Apple
  • Caramel Coffee
  • Caramel Cinnamon

Each of the flavors have a rich creamy caramel taste with a hint of apple, coffee, or cinnamon. Caramel Coffee is well… you had me at coffee.

At only 40 calories for 5 candies, and since they’re hard, they last for awhile, I can satisfy my sweet-tooth as well as satisfy my hunger so I can go longer between meals. And I always have Werther’s Original Sugar Free Candy with me at my son’s play rehearsal and performances.

I’m so glad these wonderful pieces of candy taste good, too. It seems oftentimes we have to sacrifice good taste for sugar free. That is not the case with Werther’s Sugar Free Candy.

If you have diabetes or just cutting down on your sugar intake (counting carbs), Werther’s Original Sugar Free is the candy for you.

Be sure to like Werther’s on Facebook. I played the Guess the Number of Caramels game (I guessed to high) and got a $1.00 coupon. You can also enter the sweepstakes for a Werther’s Original Sugar Free gift pack.
