Remember when iPads were first released? They really seemed like the future when Steve Jobs first unveiled his ‘tablet’ idea and for a while owning one was a transformative experience. No longer did going online have to mean loading up a PC then sitting tethered to it at a desk while you squinted in poor light to see what was happening – now it meant kicking back on the sofa with a cup of coffee and holding a light and elegant device in one hand to browse through the news or the latest articles.

Then there was the fact that it could play 3D games and movies, the innovative ‘face time’ and the influx of wonderful augmented reality apps that came with the iPad 2’s camera.

But for some of us now that magic is wearing off. Perhaps your iPad is sitting collecting dust in the corner, or maybe you find yourself longing for a Galaxy Note or Surface Tablet. iPads are no longer quite so unique and they’re certainly not so new anymore, so how do you recapture that magic? Let’s take a look at some of the things you can do…

Download: Don’t Look Back

Don’t Look Back is a fantastic game from the same indie developer that brought us VVVVVV. This one is a little different though, providing a short and concise story that’s told through the format of a tough-as-nails 2D shoot ’em up. There’s a twist ending that’s actually enough to get you a little choked up and it’s best experienced all in one sitting. The best thing about it? It’s completely for free. Give it a play through and you’ll quickly see just how fantastic indie mobile apps can be.

Download: The Marvel Comics App

If you have even a passing interest in comics, then you should download the Marvel App right away. Comics seem practically made to be enjoyed through the iPad and this is a fantastic way to try something new and different while marvelling at that beautiful Retina display.

What’s best of all about the app though, is the recent ‘infinite comics’ that Marvel has been putting out. These comic are designed to make better use of the unique features of the iPad, adding more interesting transitions and effects to make the experience even more immersive.

Purchase Some iPad Accessories

The iPad may seem like a device that you only interact with in one way (by swiping and jabbing at the screen mostly) but actually there are many other ways to control Apple’s baby if you have the right accessories. A stylus for instance can allow you to be even more accurate whether trying to click links or draw pictures in ‘Draw Something’, while a keyboard case can turn your iPad into a full laptop replacement for most tasks.

Visit a Famous Landmark

Whether you’ve upgraded yet, or you still have Google Maps, the maps on iPads are still pretty wondrous. If you want to be reminded of that fact, then try visiting the Coliseum or the Grand Canyon from the comfort of your sofa…
