Things to Consider When Moving Abroad

things to consider when moving abroad

At some point in your life, you will come across someone who either has or wants to move abroad. You may even find yourself desiring to experience life outside of your current country. It is becoming more and more common. Why? Because we can!

Many decades ago, moving abroad seemed foolish and undoable. People were used to living a conservative life, where one accepted their life in their home in their current location. Migrating to a different country was not thought about, because it was not considered ‘normal’. People only moved if they had to. Another factor which affected migration rates was money. Many people did not have the finances required to move abroad, meaning that it did not happen a lot.

Nowadays, more and more people are moving abroad because they have realized that they can. There is nothing preventing people from moving. People now tend to have a lot more money than they did decades to go (believe it or not!) meaning that people have the option of moving into something bigger or fancier.

Even though the option is available to us, there are a few things that need to be considered before the decision can be made. This is where this article comes in. It aims to highlight some of the main things that need to be considered and thought about before moving.

The first thing to consider is whether or not your big move will involve having to learn a new language. Moving from England to the United States will be easier than moving from England to Italy since Italian is still the main language spoken in Italy, and not everyone can comprehend or converse in English.

Second, you need to consider the impact moving will have on your children, if you have any. If your child is close to taking exams such as GCSE’s etc. moving will not be the greatest idea, since it is going to affect their education in a negative way. Be sure to know what level your child is working at in terms of the education system in the country you wish to move to.

Consider finances. Chances are that when you first move, neither you nor your spouse will have a job immediately. Ensure that you have enough savings to keep you going whilst you are settling in and job hunting. Not accounting for this time period will leave you struggling and disappointed.

Decide how you are going to get there. There are many different transportation methods, from ferries to planes. Decide on the easiest, cheapest, most convenient way for you and your family.

This is very important, especially if you are thinking about taking your household belongings with you. Talking to removal specialists is highly advised, since they will be able to guide and help you get your belongings across the border. It definitely takes the load off of you.

Before taking any steps of the moving process, ensure that you are prepared and plan for it all. Preparation is the key to success. By planning and keeping a checklist, you will be in charge of your own removal, rather than it being in charge of you. It will also mean that you will not have to face any nasty surprises, since everything will be planned for.

Moving abroad is one of the most life changing experiences one can go through. You could finally end up living in your dream destination, so go ahead, do your research and take that step into transforming your life for the better.

  1. I knew a woman that when her family had to go abroad for 2 years due to her husband’s job she decided to rent her house out here in the States and she rented an apartment in France. She did not have to move a thing…I always wondered what I would do. Not sure if I would like renters using my things…

  2. I think it would be wonderful to live in Europe. The travel aspects ALONE would be amazing. I have children now though, and a grand on the way, so it’s not even an option, but I def. think it would be nice. I was happy to read the post. I saw it bouncing around on Twitter. 🙂

  4. If I had the opportunity to move abroad, I’d just ditch all my American stuff and start over in my new country. I pretty much did that when we moved to Arizona in 2011.

  5. I don’t think this will ever be a concern for us. Some days I wish it would be. Think of the adventure!
