Motorola DEFY XT Smartphone – Great First Phone for Tweens & Teens #sponsored

Kids and smartphone SS post

If you’re a parent of upcoming tweens and/or teens do you plan on getting them a smartphone? Is the topic of smartphones a frequent discussion in your home? I’m guessing as a parent in the 21st century, it probably is a subject that has come up… more than once.

My son is ten and doesn’t currently have a smartphone, but my husband and I have been discussing it. Some of his friends around his age already have smartphones, and it’s not like he has even asked for one, because he hasn’t…. but there are times when he is at play rehearsals, when he forgot something, he could have easily texted me or his Dad and we could have brought it to him.

We always know where our son is, but I know there will come a day, when we may not know exactly where he is every minute of the day.

I also know that it can get pricey when every member of your family wants/has a smartphone. Did you know that the average American spends more on their monthly cellphone bill than they do on groceries or health insurance?

That’s CRAZY!

Well, the Motorola DEFY XT Smartphone from Republic Wireless built a smartphone service that will cut the cost of smartphone ownership from over $100/month (what most folks pay right now) down to just $19/month, or about 60 cents a day.

Now that CRAZY… in a good way!

The Motorola DEFY XT Smartphone Features:

  • Front-facing VGA Webcam
  • Rear-facing camera with auto focus/LED Flash, 4x digital zoom
  • Android operating system with wi-fi and Sprint® 3G Coverage with dual-band reception
  • Over 450,000 Apps through Google Play™
  • 3.7 inch Corning® Gorilla® glass display
  • Dustproof, water and scratch resistant

What a great first phone for a kid! It would be a great first phone for anyone (like my Mom) venturing out into the world of smartphones for the first time…. regardless of their age.

The dustpoof, water, and scratch resistance is a definite plus. I know how rough I am on my smartphone, I can only imagine one in the hands of a kid.

And just like adults, kids love taking pictures. Having a great webcam and camera is important to tweens and teens, so it’s an important factor in choosing a smartphone.

Even though I’m a Mom, and old and all, and can’t possibly be cool or know what I’m talking about….

Heed some advice from a mom who loves social media, though —  If you do take selfies, ask yourself, “Would I be embarrassed or ashamed if my parents saw this?” … before you post those selfies. Once you put them out there, they’re out there forever.

Do your kids have a smartphone? Or are you considering a smartphone for your kids?

  1. That is amazing! I have a 15 year old and a soon to be 13 year old that currently have a “dumb” phone for when they are out and an iPod touch that they can use when they are connected to wifi. Between my husband and I, our bill for 2 iPhones is over $250 a month. We just couldn’t afford to add the kids. With this plan, it is affordable! Thanks for sharing 🙂

  2. My son’s started asking for one now. He just turned 11. This is the best option I’ve come across so far.

  3. That is crazy about how much people spend on their cell phones!!! And I guess not surprising, seeing as how dialed in we are these days.

Carrie, yes, everyone has a cell phone (even my in-laws and parents). 🙂 More and more people are getting smartphones, too. But it’s crazy to pay such huge amounts on service each month.

  4. I have 3 kids so between my wife and me and the 3 kids that would add up to a huge phone bill. I gave my 15 year old daughter a phone – the other 2 are going to have to wait until they are older. They are always around someone who has a phone.

  5. This is great! My children are too young for smartphones (or any phones for that matter!) but my sister is looking to get my nieces a phone so I’ll share this with her! I love that it’s water and scratch resistant!

  6. We were waiting before getting a phone for my daughter, however for safety reasons we have given her one so she can reach us during an emergency. She has a limited plan though and her phone will be checked by us on a regular basis to see who she calls/texts. I wish I had known about this phone before

  7. My kids had phones without text or data plans on them until they went to college. I realize it’s a different day now, but I’m so glad I escaped all of that!

  8. It won’t be long till we’ll need to buy a phone for our grandson, thanks for the info!

  9. What, wow 19 is insanely good! My daughter has a cell and she is really good about what she posts over the internet.

  10. Is it sad that I just got my first smartphone a couple weeks ago? Of course now I don’t know what I did without it. Still the concepts of teens and smartphones is amazing to me. I’m not that old yet, but when I was in high school hardly anyone had a cell phone. We all got them when we left for college. That was only 11 years ago! I know my 7 year old cousin wants one, so I guess my two year old will probably start asking in a couple years then. :-p

  11. I have never heard of this phone up until I read your review! You are right this phone is perfect for tweens and teen! Thank you so much for writing this review!

  12. My youngest does not have a cell phone, though he would love to have one. $19/month is crazy good!

  13. Our daughter is 17 and just got her first smartphone last month.

  14. Looks like a good option for my grandkids to start with, what am I saying, for me to start with! lol
