Who has time to clean? I know with my busy schedule, deadlines, volunteering, my family, and the list goes on and on… it was difficult to keep my home clean.

Honestly, I hate cleaning. There, I said it. I do however, love a clean house. So I have a conundrum.

After many failed attempts of trying to find a plan that worked for us, we finally decided on a chore chart and an allowance.

Cody's Chore Chart 9_22_13

As you can see, I print out a weekly chart, that I customize to fit my son’s chores and a theme to fit the season. Since it’s officially fall now, this one has a scarecrow on it. He sometimes colors in the picture, this week it did not.

He has two chores that have to be done daily. Feeding our dog and keeping his playroom picked up. His bedroom and bathroom has to be cleaned (a thorough cleaning) once a week, which he does on either Saturday or Sunday, his choice. If he doesn’t do it on Saturday, he has to do it Sunday.

I clean his bedroom and bathroom once a week myself, but he knows it’s his responsibility to do it himself once a week. As he gets older he will have to clean it twice a week himself. His room doesn’t get bad, really, since the only thing he does in it is read and sleep.

He isn’t allowed to eat in his bedroom and he does most everything else in his playroom. Which is why he has to pick up his playroom every evening before his shower/bath. This usually includes running the vacuum cleaner… since he does eat in there.

As you can see from the chart he hasn’t cleaned his bathroom yet this week. Since he doesn’t have school today because of an in-service day, he says he wants to clean it today. Otherwise, he has to clean it tomorrow.

He also has the responsibility of dusting the entire house once a week. Dusting is easy, so it’s something we feel he can handle once a week. In a couple more years I’m going to add vacuuming all the carpeted rooms in our home. He actually enjoys vacuuming.

  1. My daughter only has one chore so far, but a chart like this will be handy in the future.

  2. I never did chore charts with the kids, but they didn’t really have chores. They just kinda did the miscellaneous things that I requested.

  3. Chore charts are definitely a smart idea. They teach kids responsibility and it’s nice to have help at home!

  4. Chore charts were always a great motivator for my son.

  5. I’ve just started putting together a chore chart. With 5 lazy kids you have to. I’m tired of the looks. Now I give them out and point at the chart 🙂

  6. I hate clean, it’s my enemy! However, the only way I get through cleaning is my cleaning cleaning schedule, it really helps and makes things less complicated.

  7. I need to start a simple chore chart for my 4 year old.

  8. Thanks for sharing – we’re in the market for a new vac!

  9. I am a huge fan of chore charts. We have always had one in our home.

  10. We do chore cards in our house. The kids each have their own chore board and they have daily cards that need to be done. They also have “extra” chore cards which earn them money.

  11. We have a chore chart too. It works for us to a point but not with deep cleaning even though I assign those things for different days or the weekend etc. We are still fine tuning it.

  12. The BISSELL PowerGlide with Lift-Off Technology sure does sounds like a pretty nice vacuum.

  13. I need a new Vacuum cleaner and this looks like a very nice one! I would love to get this model because it looks like it really cleans good. I have had a Bissell before and it really cleaned my house good.

  14. I wish I could be as positive about Bissell as you obviously are. I bought a carpet cleaner last year – it’s basically fine. But – the blue clean-water plastic container is very flimsy. Mine distorted badly, and makes it difficult to use.
I wrote to Bissell (UK) last October. I’m still waiting for a reply (March 2014). . .
