Grey’s Anatomy – The Ghost Story

One of the best love stories, that never came to fruition, is that of Izzie, Katherine Heigl and Denny, Jeffery Dean Morgan on Grey’s Anatomy.  Along with Izzy, I fell in love with Denny.  And during the second season of Grey’s Anatomy when the Denny and Izzy love affair began and ended… I felt their love affair was rushed.

Denny and Izzy’s romance began the second season of Grey’s culminating in the final episode of that season when Denny dies.  Denny is a heart transplant recipient that Izzy falls in love with, while she is seeing Alex.  From the Grey’s Anatomy Wiki, here is a recap of Season 2, Episode No. 25, 17 Seconds,

A heart is found for Denny, but the donor dies before Burke arrives for the organ harvest. He attempts to get the heart from another donor, but Denny is second on the transplant list, having been entered 17 seconds after the first placed person. On hearing this, Izzie takes matters into her own hands, cutting power to his LVAD (left ventricular assist device) so that he will go to the top of the UNOS donor list. She also does this because she knows Burke will arrive soon and will be able to operate quickly. The gunman from the restaurant finds the manager at the hospital and opens fire. The episode ends with Bailey finding Burke shot and apparently unconscious in front of the hospital.

What Izzy couldn’t have anticipated was the shooting of Dr. Burke.  With Burke shot, there was no one to operate on Denny.  So Izzy actually caused the death of Denny.

I realize many viewers do not like the Izzy and Denny’s ghost story this season.  I know it isn’t a realistic storyline… but just to have Jeffery Dean Morgan back on Grey’s is such a treat for me.  I love Morgan as an actor; and the character Denny is one of my favorite male characters on TV right now.

I also have hopes that the storyline will be either believable or at the very least tolerable.  According to tvguide.com,

"I think that when you get to the end of the season, you’ll see everything that [Grey’s creator Shonda Rhimes] had in mind. It might not be your cup of tea, but I think you will be surprised at how insightful and actually smart the storyline is in terms of the dynamics that it’s creating for the characters who are involved, and where we end up with those characters at the end."

Will Izzy be diagnosed with a brain tumor or a mental illness?  Or is Denny truly a ghost or maybe an angel that only Izzy can see and touch?  Or will season 5 be a dream?  We will have to wait and see.  I just want to reiterate, I am glad to see Jeffery Dean Morgan as Denny back on Grey’s Anatomy, in whatever capacity that may be.

Watch Grey’s Anatomy Season 5 on Thursday nights at 9:00 pm EST on ABC.  We would love to hear your opinion.  Do you like the Izzy and Denny ‘ghost’ storyline?  Leave a comment and let us know.  Hope to hear from you!

  1. I completely agree with you about Denny. Most people having been complaining about how unrealistic this story is. I just don’t care. I love the character of Denny. I love watching Jeffery Dean Morgan. I’ll take him anyway I can get him. Why he has to be dead on every show he is on I don’t know. Hopefully he will finally get a series in which he can permanently play a living character. He has more charisma than most actors on TV today.

  2. @Jennifer: I was having a mail server problem and just got this comment. I know… I think Jeffery Dean Morgan is one of the most handsome actors ever. That would be so great to see him with his own series!

  3. I just saw epoisode 2 of Season 5 and was delighted to see Denny. What it is about this relationship that touches my heart so much? I gather from your blog, the ghost story line is to run throughout the series? I hope so! And I really don’t care if it’s realistic or not. I’m just thrilled they’ve brought him back. Yummy!
