Favorite Christmas Recipes

ChristmasTable While planning my Christmas menu and thinking about some of my favorite Christmas recipes I wanted to try some new recipes this Christmas.  With the help of Bridget at The Get Smart Blog and GSW Social Network I asked for some of their favorite recipes.

I am happy to say I found some delicious recipes to add to my Christmas table this year.  Here are a few recipes from some of my Internet friends:

Beth at Sunshine Daydreamz shared this yummy breakfast casserole that she likes to serve on Christmas morning, along with muffins and fruit. You can cook the sausage ahead of time so itสผs fast to put together.

Breakfast Egg and Sausage Casserole

Ingredients

1 lb bulk breakfast sausage (hot is my favorite)

8 eggs

½ loaf stale bread (leftover French bread works great)

8 oz. shredded cheese (any kind)

1 cup milk

1 tsp. Dijon mustard

½ tsp season salt

dash black pepper

Directions

Crumble sausage & cook until browned. Tear the bread into random pieces and put in a large buttered casserole dish. Top with the sausage and cheese. In a bowl, beat the eggs along with milk, Dijon mustard and spices. Pour egg mixture all over the bread mixture. Be sure that all the bread is moistened. If needed you can add a bit more milk directly to the dish where the bread is dry. Allow to sit while heating oven to 375 degrees. Bake 30 minutes or until set. Serves 6.

Thanks Beth for sharing this recipe… I’ll have to give it a try.

Nancy at Get Smart Health shared this great appetizer that she says kids beg for… and a great way to get the good greenies into your kids!

Marinated Broccoli

Ingredients

1 large bunch broccoli, cut tips off big enough to pick up bite size pcs.

1 tbs garlic powder

1 tbs dill weed

¼ cup Olive Oil

½ cup red vinegar

2 tsp sugar

¼ tsp sea salt, or regular salt

Sprinkle of red pepper flakes

Directions

Put broccoli in Ziploc baggy.  Toss in all the ingredients.  Shake & toss every hour.  Refrigerate at least a few hours, 6 best!

Nancy, I tried these already and they are yummy!

I enjoy ham for Christmas and this is the best honey glazed ham, ever!… well in my opinion, anyway.  This is the ham I’ve baked for several years now and it’s as good as the expensive hams you get from places like Honey Baked Hams.

Honey Glazed Ham

Ingredients

10 lb ham (smaller or larger depending on how many you are feeding – just adjust the other ingredients accordingly)

1 1/2 cups honey

1/2 – 3/4 cups brown sugar

3/4 cup butter

Directions

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C).

Score and place ham in foil lined pan.

In the top half of a double boiler, heat the brown sugar, honey and butter. Keep glaze warm while baking ham.

Brush glaze over ham, and bake for 1 hour and 15 minutes in the preheated oven. Baste ham every 10 to 15 minutes with the honey glaze. During the last 4 to 5 minutes of baking, turn on broiler to caramelize the glaze. Remove from oven, and let sit a few minutes before serving.

It is important to keep the glaze warm, it helps it to brush on easier.  Also a plus is that this glaze makes a ham taste so delicious that you can use a cheap ham and it still tastes so good.  So if you’re on a budget this year, this is the perfect ham recipe.

I don’t know about you… but I love the desserts at Christmas time.  Here are two very yummy additions to my Christmas dessert list this year.

From Theresa at Get Smart Women a tantalizing cheesecake.  Theresa says, "this cheese cake is to die for!"

Cheesecake

Ingredients

2 c. finely ground graham crackers
1-1/2 c. sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
½ c. melted butter
4 eggs
1/8 tsp. Salt
1-1/2 tsp. lemon juice
1-1/2 tsp grated lemon rind
1 c. evaporated milk
1-1/2 lbs. cottage cheese
4 tbs. Flour
¼ c. chopped nuts

Directions

Mix graham crackers with ½ cup sugar, cinnamon, and butter. Set aside ¾ cup of mixture to sprinkle over top.

Press remainder into 9-inch spring form pan. Lining bottom and sides.

Beat eggs with remaining 1 cup sugar until light; add salt, lemon juice, rind, evaporated milk, cottage cheese and flour. I put it in a blender to bend together. Pour into the lined pan, sprinkle with remaining crumbs and nuts.

Bake in oven at 350 F for about 1 hour or until center is set. Turn off heat, open over door and let stand in oven 1 hour or until cool.

Theresa, my husband loves cheesecake and informed me he would like me to fix this for Christmas.

And this dessert from Bridget at The Get Smart Blog sounds absolutely scrumptious!  It has to be good because it’s a Paula Deen recipe.

Apple Butter Pumpkin Pie

Ingredients

1 cup apple butter
1 cup fresh or canned pumpkin
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
3/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon ground ginger
3 eggs, slightly beaten
3/4 cup evaporated milk
1 unbaked 9-inch pie shell
Sweetened whipped cream, for garnish

Directions

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.

Combine apple butter, pumpkin, sugar, salt and spices in a bowl. Stir in eggs. Gradually add milk and mix well. Pour into pie shell. Bake for about 40 minutes or until set.

Bridget, I don’t know if I can wait till Christmas to try this!
